London Gatwick has welcomed the Court of Appeal’s decision to comprehensively reject the legal challenges brought by two campaign groups opposing the airport’s Northern Runway Project. The ruling confirms that the Secretary of State for Transport’s September 2025 approval was made properly, lawfully, and following extensive scrutiny.
Pierre‑Hugues Schmit, Chief Executive of London Gatwick, said the judgment brings to a close an eight‑year planning and legal process that has rigorously tested every aspect of the airport’s expansion plans.
He added:
“This final ruling means we can now press on with the important job of bringing this exciting project to life and move forward into the design and delivery phase.”
The Northern Runway Project is expected to deliver major national and regional benefits, including:
- 14,000 new jobs
- £1 billion added to the UK economy every year
- A comprehensive employment, skills and business strategy designed to maximise opportunities for local people and the wider Gatwick region
