Manufacturing businesses across Brighton & Hove, Sussex and the wider South East are being encouraged to explore a new Government scheme that could significantly reduce their electricity costs and improve competitiveness.
The British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme (BICS) has been launched to support manufacturing businesses operating in Industrial Strategy growth sectors by reducing electricity costs by up to £40 per megawatt hour, equivalent to an average discount of around 25% off electricity bills. Eligible businesses will also receive an additional payment in 2027 to cover costs broadly equivalent to a further year’s benefit.
The scheme is expected to benefit more than 10,000 businesses across the UK. Applications will open on 1 October 2026 and close on 30 November 2026.
Businesses can find further information, check eligibility and access official guidance through the Government’s British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme webpages:

The Department for Business and Trade has also launched an online eligibility checker to help businesses assess whether they are likely to qualify for support under the scheme. Eligible manufacturers are encouraged to review the guidance and begin preparing their applications ahead of the opening date.
A business webinar will take place on 24 September 2026 to provide further information ahead of applications opening on 1 October 2026.
Organisations supporting local business growth are encouraging manufacturers operating in eligible sectors to explore the opportunity and take advantage of the potential savings available through the scheme.
For further information about the scheme, businesses can contact the BICS team at bics.correspondence@businessandtrade.gov.uk.
