Press Release: Sussex & Brighton Strategic Authority Announces Major Milestones and £117 Million Investment for the Region

The Sussex & Brighton Strategic Authority (SBSA) has announced a series of landmark achievements, including the successful hosting of its first Annual General Meeting (AGM), the appointment of a new Board and leadership team, and the unlocking of £117 million in government investment for the region over the next four years.

The inaugural AGM, held at Crawley Borough Council, marked the formal gathering of the newly elected Board, with Councillor Bella Sankey (Brighton & Hove City Council) appointed as Chair, and Councillors Andy Woolley (East Sussex County Council) and Jay Mercer (West Sussex County Council) as joint Vice-Chairs. This leadership rotation ensures representation from across Sussex ahead of the first Mayoral election in 2028.

A headline announcement from the AGM was the unlocking of £117 million in government funding, part of a wider £1.14 billion secured for Sussex over the next 30 years. Chair Cllr Sankey commented, “The Government is overseeing an unprecedented transfer of money and power into the country’s regions and the Sussex & Brighton Authority is leading the way as one of the first of the newest areas to secure devolution.”

The SBSA also unveiled its new Prosperity Strategy framework, outlining priorities to grow the economy, attract high-quality jobs, build more affordable housing, and improve regional connectivity. The Authority invites local businesses and residents to participate in shaping the full strategy, with consultation sessions scheduled throughout the summer.
