Construction to Begin on A259 Hove–Portslade Active Travel Scheme

Brighton & Hove City Council will begin construction in the coming weeks on the new A259 Hove to Portslade Active Travel Scheme, a major investment designed to improve walking, cycling and public transport infrastructure along one of the city’s most important coastal corridors.

The scheme covers the stretch between Fourth Avenue and the city’s western boundary, delivering a safer, more accessible and more attractive route for residents, commuters and visitors. Improvements include a new separated two‑way cycle lane, upgraded pavements and bus stops, safer crossings and junctions, and new loading and disabled parking bays.

The first phase of construction will focus on the section between Fourth Avenue and Hove Street, with access to all properties maintained throughout. Contractors will liaise directly with occupants and businesses when work takes place immediately outside premises.

A Key Route for Active Travel

The A259 is identified in the city’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) as a priority corridor and forms part of National Cycle Network Route 2. Currently, no separated cycle route exists west of Hove Lagoon, despite the area being a popular route for everyday travel and leisure.

Funding Secured

The project is supported by £4.3 million from Active Travel England, alongside £2.7 million from the council’s Local Transport Plan, allocated over three years.

Designed with Community Input

A six‑week public consultation in summer 2025 attracted more than 900 responses, with 65% from local residents. Feedback showed strong support for wider pavements, improved crossings, upgraded cycle facilities and better public spaces.

As a result, several design changes have been incorporated, including:

  • Redesigned crossing points
  • Increased parking spaces
  • Relocated bus stops
  • More space between cycle lanes and parked cars
  • Additional green spaces
  • Retaining the current Tandridge Road bus stop location
